Obituary

Patricia M. (Lang) Fitzgerald, a resident of Reading for 4 years formerly of Manchester, Needham, Roslindale, Belmont, North Falmouth and Milton, passed away from complications related to kidney disease on June 21, 2022 at the Residence at Pearl Street.  She was 88 years of age.  Patricia was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 8, 1933 the daughter of the late John T. and Elizabeth (Reid) Lang.  Patricia was raised in Roslindale but was happiest spending her childhood summers in North Falmouth.

Patricia received her diploma from Notre Dame Academy in Roxbury (now Hingham) in 1951 and a B.S. in Education and Economics from Trinity College in Washington, D.C. in 1955. While teaching in the Stoughton Public Schools she met John F Fitzgerald through Catholic social circles and what friends and family have often described as an "epic romance" culminated in their 1957 marriage. Pat and Jack travelled together happily throughout New England as she actively assisted her husband in his role as zone manager for the Gibson/Easy Appliance Company.

Pat and Jack put down roots in Manchester, NH and then in 1958 endured the early loss of their first child, John to Hyaline Membrane Disease (HMD). Anticipating the birth of their son James, and a further promotion for Jack, the couple moved to Needham, MA in 1960. Another son, Steven was lost to HMD in 1963 and then tragically Jack succumbed to Eastern Equine Encephalitis in 1964.  Pat moved back in with her family in Roslindale and visited Jack's family in Belmont faithfully every Sunday.

When time allowed Pat worked as a substitute teacher in the Boston Public Schools and the Dedham Public Schools. A favorite role was as a special needs teacher at the Kennedy School in Brighton. Devoted to seeing Jim raised as planned with Jack, Patricia always found a way to help. She volunteered as a substitute teacher at Holy Name School in West Roxbury, as a cub scout co-Den Mother, as secretary of the (former) Nyes Neck Yacht Club, and as a reliable and steadfast volunteer and leader of the Parent's Auxiliary at The Roxbury Latin School.

When Jim moved on to college Pat immersed herself in life in North Falmouth on Cape Cod, participating in the Cancer Support Group at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, the Falmouth Garden Club, the Nyes Neck Association, and the North Falmouth Village Association. She attended mass daily as her health allowed at St. Elizabeth Seton in North Falmouth and St. John's Church in Pocasset. She was the type of person who knew every family member as well as clerk and waitperson at every store and restaurant by name and took a real interest in them as people.

She stayed close to her family in Milton and then in Reading in her later years. Her beloved granddaughter Liana was another great love of Pat's life, and they routinely spent 2-3 afternoons together each week in Milton. Pat's story is more remarkable in the light of an ongoing, mostly victorious battle with bipolar depression that began in 1960 and her battle with Kidney Disease that began around 2013.

Patricia was the beloved wife of the late John F. Fitzgerald.  Devoted mother of James J. Fitzgerald and his wife Ida of Reading and the late John and Stephen Fitzgerald.  Cherished sister of Joan E. Keith of New Hampshire and loving grandmother of Michael, William, and the late Liana Fitzgerald.

Patricia will be waked at the Douglass, Edgerley, and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading on Friday July 15 th from 4-7 PM.
