Odelle J.
(Corkum) Spinney
Sep 30, 1933 — Jun 15, 2022
Reading
Odelle J. (Corkum) Spinney "Dell" of Reading passed away on June 15, 2022 at her home at The Residence at Pearl Street. She was 88 years of age.
Dell was born in West Berlin, Queens County, Nova Scotia, Canada on September 30, 1933, the only child of the late Alfred B. and Hattie (Smith) Corkum.
Dell lived in various small villages in Nova Scotia during her childhood. She graduated from Lockeport Regional High School in 1950. She attended the Normal School for Teachers for a ten-month term and received a Class A license and then was ready to teach school. She taught grammar school from 1951 to 1956. Dell met her husband Herbert on a blind date in 1951. They had a long-distance relationship as Herbert moved to Texas and joined the U.S. Army shortly after they met. They married in 1956 and moved to Somerville, Massachusetts. They moved to Reading in 1964, and enjoyed almost 65 years of marriage until Herbert's death in 2021.
Dell worked at Liberty Mutual until her children were born. She was a stay-at-home mother for many years, selling Fuller Brush door-to-door as her youngest got a bit older. She returned to the daily workforce when all of her children were in school. She worked at American Mutual, as a cafeteria cashier for Seilers until American Mutual downsized, changed names, and moved locations to Burlington. She followed them, now A.I.M. Mutual, working as an office clerk until her retirement.
Dell enjoyed knitting and sewing. She made many of her own clothes as well as those for her daughters, when they were younger. She was an expert knitter who made many afghans for loved ones, and sweaters for each grandchild. Dell was a proud member of the Reading Knitting Circle. There she made beautiful lap afghans and smaller sweaters, to donate to the local hospitals for the children and for the elderly. She also belonged to the Patron's Club in Reading for many years.
Dell was the beloved wife of the late Herbert W. Spinney. Devoted mother of Cheryl Buckley and her husband Steven of Dracut, Keith Spinney and his wife Judith of Medway, and Lori Spinney of Michigan. Loving grandmother of Ryan and his wife Melissa, Sean and Erinn Buckley; Brian, Melissa and David Spinney; Maggie and Alice Horton.
