Obituary

Mary Salter, age 95, known for her expressive eyes, wonderful sense of humor, adventurous and flirtatious spirit, artistic abilities, unfiltered remarks, plus devotion to family and friends, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at the Village of Duxbury. She was born on May 1, 1927, in Orange, NJ. She was the seventh child of the late William Edmund Hooke and Gertrude Roy Hooke.

Mary was a 1945 graduate of Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ. She trained for a year at the Pratt Institute in NYC and then united in marriage on June 13, 1947, at Saint George Episcopal Church in Maplewood, NJ, to Willard Cutler Salter, who preceded her death in February 2009. As a family they lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Ultimately, they settled and retired to Orleans, MA, for 28 years, and then moved to the Village at Duxbury for 19 years. Mary loved entertaining and had a wonderful optimistic love of life that she passed on to many. She was a very talented watercolorist and gardener. In her retirement, she participated in and led the Lower Cape Artist Guild and the Orleans Garden Club. She and her husband Willard were active bridge players and traveled the world on many cruises.

Mary and Willard were a devoted couple. They forged an eternal bond with their five children. Survivors include their five children: Suzanne (Paul) Krautmann, Keene, N.H.; Mary Jean (John) Rest, Mashpee, MA; William Salter (Thomas) France and Philippines; Robert (Lorraine) Salter, Salem and Chatham MA; Richard (Lisa) Salter, Geneva NY. She is beloved as Mimi by her 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, with more expected, and as Aunt Mary to her many loving nieces and nephews.

A private burial followed by a family celebration of life will be held in early October.

Contributions may be made in her memory to Wounded Warrior Project, Doctors Without Borders and Artisan Guild of Cape Cod
