Geraldine M.
Cullen
Mar 9, 1934 — Mar 9, 2019
Reading
Cullen- Geraldine "Geri" M. (Silvey) of Reading, formerly of Malden and Medford, March 9, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Paul F. Cullen. Devoted mother of the late Teresa Cuddy and her husband Michael of Reading, Denise Singleton and her husband John of Westwood, Doreen Oughton and her husband Quentin Lewis of Leicester, Paula Uttaro and her husband Ray of Naples, Maine, James F. Cullen and his wife Di of Nashua, NH, Stephen Cullen and his wife Adrienne of Westford. Sister of Joseph Silvey of Boston and Roberta Murphy of Melrose. Loving grandmother of 16 and loving great grandmother of 2. Geri also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her dearly.
She was raised in Malden by her loving parents, Frank and Millie Silvey, and raised her family in Medford before moving to Reading after retirement. She was a communicant for many years at Immaculate Conception Church in Malden, where she taught CCD and participated in their variety shows. In her later years she attended St. Agnes Church in Reading. She lived out her faith by sharing love with everyone she encountered. She taught her children that every person has value and ought to be treated kindly. She taught by word and by deed. Her house sometimes looked like the local community center, as she warmly welcomed her children's friends, nieces, nephews and neighbors. She had a great sense of fun and provided chocolate chip cookies in abundance.
She spent many years working as a Mary Kay sales rep and director, helping people express their inner beauty outwardly. She also mentored many women in the business. People came to her not just for make-up tips, but for her warmth, her listening ear and kind heart. She went out of her way to deliver products, encourage her team, find just the right shade of blush - and she did it with joy.
Geri loved her career, but dove into it only after her children were launched. For her, family was the top priority. Mothering was her gift and her call. She lavished love and praise on her children, as well as her husband, and on the grandchildren when they came. She adjusted easily to the chaos of a large family and was always ready for adventure. She played, she sang and she danced. Boy, did she dance. But the thing she did most was spread joy. She always had light in her eye, a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. Her light and her love will be very deeply missed.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday March 22 at St. Catherine Church 107 North Main St. Westford at 10:00 am. Burial is private. A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 21 at the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading from 4-8 pm.
