Carol A.
(Rock) Dobbyn
Dec 14, 1934 — Dec 2, 2021
Salem
Carol (Rock) Dobbyn, a longtime resident of Newton and recent resident of Salem, passed away at home on December 2nd at the age of 86. Carol was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 14, 1934, the daughter of the late Francis Rock and Jane (Brady) Rock.
Carol was the beloved wife of the late Philip J Dobbyn, whom she married in 1960, and lost too soon in 1969. Carol was the sister to Frank Rock who currently resides in Sarasota, FL, and the late Robert Rock. Carol leaves behind her only son, Philip and her daughter-in-law, Meghan of Reading, MA. Carol was a beloved in-law to her sisters and brothers-in-law, always counting her in-laws among her closest friends. And "Aunt Carol" will be missed by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and dear cousins who were a part of her everyday life - right up to her passing.
Carol graduated Boston College with a degree in Education and was a teacher at many times throughout her career. She alternated teaching with administrative roles with a work ethic that never quit and working part-time well into her 70's. She also worked as a paralegal for a private practice law firm and later for the Assistant DA for Suffolk County Boston.
Carol loved to learn and continued to take classes up until 2019; adult lectures on art and history from local colleges being her favorites. Carol was a voracious reader, often reading 3-4 books concurrently and the local libraries all knew her by name. During Carol's semi-retirement and retirement years, she volunteered at the MFA and a number of local theaters as an usher, continuing to meet new friends and enjoy the arts.
Carol lived for 50 years in Newton. Passionate about gardening in the large rock garden in front of her home, she was a great neighbor, and she leaves behind friends in both Newton and Salem. Carol enjoyed dining out, she loved Broadway plays and travel, and she loved walking in Salem, surrounded by history.
There will be an Open House for family and friends to remember and celebrate Carol on Sunday, December 12th, from 1-4pm at The Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, 18 Washington Square West. Please stop by to share a picture, tell a story, and say hello to a friend or two. For those that cannot join us, please forward anything you'd like to share to caroldobbynmemories@gmail.com - Phil and Meghan would love to hear from you.
For the safety of our family and friends, we respectfully ask that all attendees be fully vaccinated if they wish to attend. In lieu of flowers, a donation to https:// www.doctorswithoutborders.org/ is requested. This was one of the many charitable organizations Carol supported throughout her life.
