Arline (Knapp)
Zemlin
Mar 31, 1919 — Aug 12, 2019
North Andover, Formerly of Reading
Arline Knapp Zemlin of North Andover, MA passed away peacefully at the age of 100 on August 12, 2019, with family at her side.
Arline was born in St Paul, MN on March 31, 1919, to Ray and Marie Knapp. With her father being a sportsman, hunting, shooting, and fishing were a big part of Arline's childhood. She and her family spent many vacations on numerous lakes around Minnesota and Wisconsin. After high school she worked at a bank and was the Saint Paul Winter Carnival Queen. At the start of WWII, Arline moved to Washington DC, where she worked with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), a predecessor to the CIA. During the war, she was transferred to London and was present during the Blitz. She worked in London for most of the war and in Paris after its liberation.
After the war, and a brief stint as a "snow bunny" in Aspen, Colorado, she returned to St. Paul where she met her future husband John C. (Jack) Zemlin. They had four children and in 1959 moved to Reading, MA. In addition to raising the kids, she worked as office and financial manager for Jack's consulting business. Her training with a rifle also helped keep their gardens free of pests as she was a crack shot. Jack died in 1993 and Arline moved to the Edgewood Retirement Community.
Arline was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed skiing, golf, bridge, and most of all spending time with her family. A constant throughout Arline's life was her joy of family and a humorous, positive outlook on life. Being able to spend so much time with her grandchildren was particularly gratifying for her.
Arline is preceded in death by her husband Jack and her sisters Marcia Sweeney and Mary Jane Graham. Arline is survived by her children John Zemlin and his wife MaryEllen, Marysue Crawford and her husband John, Ray Zemlin and his wife Nancy, and Barb Zemlin, as well as grandchildren Sam Wetter, Jack Zemlin, Lucas Zemlin, Miles Crawford, Zach Zemlin, Ben Zemlin, Mike Fortier, Bridget Fortier, and Johnny Fortier.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Edgewood Retirement Community and staff at the Meadows for their support in her final days. She will be laid to rest and reunited with her beloved husband Jack at a private ceremony at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Reading. There will be no visiting hours. Donations in memory of Arline may be made to the Reading Public Library, 64 Middlesex Avenue, Reading MA 01867.
